Howard Livingston: A Biography

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

Howard Livingston did what many of us only dream of doing: he retired from the 9-to-5 life and became a full-time musician in the Florida Keys.

Born in the Bluegrass State, raised in the Hoosier State, and schooled in the Land of Lincoln, Livingston started playing music at the age of five when his mother gave him his first six-string.  Although he never stopped playing, he took a short 22 year detour into the engine part manufacturing business as an engineer and business owner.  Over the years, he visited the Florida Keys numerous times and developed a strong case of "Keys Fever".  Finally, after more than two decades in the professional life, Livingston gave it all up and made the move to Summerland Key, 24 miles north of Key West.  He started performing immediately and the Mile Marker 24 Band was born.

The first album, Livin' on Key West Time, was released in 2005 and the second, Meet Me in the Keys, in 2006.  During this time, the Mile Marker 24 Band went through several revisions from a two-man duo to a ten-man miniature orchestra and back.  It was finally decided that the band would not settle on a set number of members, but would grow and shrink as it was called for.  2007 saw their first major success, Blame It on the Margaritas.  The title track from this album won Livingston the "Song of the Year" from the Trop Rock Music Awards.  The next album, I'm Living on an Island, brought the band even more accolades as it won numerous awards: "Album of the Year", "Song of the Year", "Band of the Year", and "Entertainer of the Year".

The latest album, Tunes in a Tropical Key, came out in 2010 and won the band more Trop Rock awards, including "Entertainer of the Year" and "Band of the Year".  Now a nationally recognized act, Livingston and the 24 Mile Marker Band are still busy making music, but for the time being they are touring exclusively in Florida.  If you'd like to learn more about Howard and his band, you can check it out here at his official website.  Make sure to tune in on Wednesday afternoons at 7 for the Gulf Coast Cowboy Hour to catch the music of Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band!
