Record Holiday Travel in Texas: 122 Million Americans Hit the Road This Season

As the holiday season ramps up across Ellis County, AAA says this year is shaping up to be one of the busiest travel seasons on record. Nationwide, nearly 122 million Americans are expected to travel for the holidays, and the vast majority will be doing exactly what many folks here prefer to do: getting behind the wheel.

In Texas alone, about 9 million people are expected to travel by road, with roughly 90 percent choosing to drive rather than fly. That means highways running through Ellis County, including I-35, Highway 287, and surrounding connectors, are expected to see heavier traffic as families head out to visit loved ones, attend holiday gatherings, or make those familiar trips to Grandma’s house.

AAA says with more drivers on the road comes an increase in common roadside issues like flat tires and dead batteries. Their crews will be busy helping stranded motorists across the state, which is why they encourage drivers to check tires, batteries, and fluids before heading out.

There is some good news for holiday travelers this year. Gas prices are lower than they were last winter, giving families a little extra breathing room in their holiday budgets.

Transportation experts also warn that congestion will be heavy around major metro areas like Dallas, Houston, and Austin, especially during peak travel times. Ellis County drivers heading north or south are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra time, and be patient.

Whether you are traveling across the county or across the state, officials say a little preparation can go a long way. Buckle up, slow down, and make sure your vehicle is ready for the road. From all of us here at KBEC, safe travels and happy holidays to you and your family.
