Former Dallas officer Amber Guyger granted parole after 7 years in Botham Jean's murder

Amber Guyger, the former Dallas police officer convicted of murdering Botham Jean, was granted parole Thursday after serving seven years of a 10-year sentence. Guyger shot Jean, a 26-year-old accountant from St. Lucia, inside his fourth-floor Dallas apartment in 2018, testifying that she mistook his unit for her own third-floor home and believed he was an intruder. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles denied her first request in 2024 but approved this one, citing a clean disciplinary record and completed prison job programs.

Jean’s family opposed the release through their attorney, Lee Merritt, arguing that a decade behind bars was already a fraction of what was lost. In 2024, a civil jury ordered Guyger to pay the family nearly $100 million. The Dallas Police Department issued a statement acknowledging the decision may bring renewed attention and emotion to a case that drew national scrutiny to how race, policing and self-defense claims intersect in America.

For Waxahachie and the surrounding communities, this story hits close to home. Dallas is a short drive up I-35, and many residents here work in the city, have family there, or have followed the case since day one. The parole decision is likely to stir strong feelings on all sides, and that’s worth acknowledging rather than talking past.
