CBS and Tony Romo Part Ways After DWI Arrest

CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways, the network confirmed Friday, closing out a nine-year run that made the former Cowboys quarterback one of the most recognizable voices in NFL broadcasting. The split comes roughly a month after Romo pleaded no contest to operating a vehicle while intoxicated following a July 23 arrest in Wisconsin. He has been on leave from the lead analyst role since the arrest and lost his driving privileges for six months.

JJ Watt, who filled in alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson during Romo’s absence, will remain on CBS’s lead NFL team. Romo had held that seat since 2017, calling the network’s biggest games each season.

In his statement, Romo pointed to back pain, a dependence on pain medication, and an over-reliance on alcohol, saying the past month has been difficult but personally significant. He plans to take a break to focus on his health and family before pursuing whatever comes next. Here in Waxahachie, where plenty of us grew up watching number 9 improvise on Sundays, it’s a story that lands differently than your average network shakeup.

What do you think: did CBS handle this the right way, or should they have given Romo a path back to the booth?
