Federal Judge Halts Border Barrier Construction in Big Bend

A federal judge in El Paso issued an injunction Friday that halts border barrier construction in the Big Bend area. The order bars the government from building a barrier or infrastructure, or doing any ground-disturbing work in and around Big Bend National Park, until it complies with all applicable laws. The ruling is temporary, but it freezes the project while the lawsuit proceeds.

That lawsuit was filed in April by the Friends of the Ruidosa Church, a landowner, and the Center for Biological Diversity. The plaintiffs argue the Trump administration needs congressional approval before building border barriers. Earlier this week, the administration had considered scaling back its Big Bend project, and the proposal had already drawn bipartisan opposition from Texas politicians.

For families across Ellis County, this may feel like a border story far from home. But the core question reaches every community: how far can executive power go without Congress? Big Bend is also one of the most protected landscapes in the state, which is why the fight over it has crossed party lines. We’ll keep tracking what happens next in the case.

What’s your take: should courts be able to pause federal border projects while lawsuits play out? Sound off in the comments.
