The Dallas Stars picked up their first victory of the young season Monday night, cruising past the San Jose Sharks 5-0 behind a 14-save shutout from Jake Oettinger. It marked the 17th shutout of Oettinger’s career, and the Stars gave him plenty of breathing room with goals from five different skaters.
Jamie Benn led the way with a goal and an assist, while Miro Heiskanen’s backhand with 1:09 remaining in the first period stood as the game-winner. Joel Kiviranta, Jason Robertson and Mikko Rantanen also found the back of the net. San Jose’s Yaroslav Askarov was busy all night, stopping 21 shots in the loss.
The Sharks played without captain Macklin Celebrini, who was scratched minutes before puck drop with a lower-body injury after leaving warmups early. The 20-year-old center is the centerpiece of the franchise and recently signed a five-year, $94 million extension, so his status is the biggest question mark hanging over San Jose after a 2-0 start to the year.
