No. 1 Texas, Oklahoma bring elite defenses, sputtering offenses to Cotton Bowl

When top-ranked Texas and Oklahoma meet Saturday at the Cotton Bowl, the scoreboard might not light up the way fans expect. Texas sits at 4-0 behind one of the nation’s best defenses, but quarterback Arch Manning was sacked six times against Tennessee and the offensive line has been inconsistent. Oklahoma, meanwhile, is 2-2 with an offense ranked No. 104 nationally and a quarterback in John Mateer who has already turned the ball over six times.

The Sooners have not scored a touchdown against Texas since their 34-30 win in 2023, and their running game is averaging only 99 yards per contest. Texas edge rusher Colin Simmons and that front seven will test Oklahoma early and often. Both head coaches have been honest about the inconsistency. Steve Sarkisian noted his team keeps winning even when it isn’t at its best, while Brent Venables said the Sooners simply haven’t put it all together yet.

History says this could be a low-scoring grinder. Back in 2001, Oklahoma won this game 14-3 on defense alone, and Saturday has that same feel. For Waxahachie fans used to packed stands at Lumpkins Stadium, this is the other big football Saturday of the year.
