DeMeco Ryans takes over Texans defensive play-calling amid 0-4 start

Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans is making a change. On Wednesday he announced he’s taking over defensive play-calling duties from coordinator Matt Burke, a move he says is about sparking change rather than a verdict on Burke’s performance. “I’m just looking for something to change,” Ryans said, adding that he wants to make sure the communication is right on defense.

The numbers tell the story of why. Last season Houston’s defense was the best in the NFL, allowing just 277.2 yards per game. This year the Texans are giving up 343.75 yards per contest, and their pass defense ranks 28th at 260 yards per game. The most painful stat for fans: Houston has led in the fourth quarter in three of its four losses, only to watch those leads slip away.

Sunday brings a matchup with the Tennessee Titans, who are also 0-4. For Texans fans around Waxahachie who make the trip down I-45 or gather around the TV, it’s a chance to see whether Ryans’ hands-on approach pays off right away. What do you think: is this the week the Texans finally close out a win?
