No. 1 Texas Faces Unranked Oklahoma in Red River Rematch

The 122nd Red River game arrives Saturday at the Cotton Bowl with a script nobody saw coming. Texas is 4-0 and ranked No. 1, while Oklahoma sits at 2-2 and unranked. Last October, the roles were flipped: the Sooners came in undefeated at No. 6 and Texas was the desperate team, and the Longhorns walked away with a 34-3 win. Texas has now taken three of the last four in the series since Brent Venables returned to Norman, and Oklahoma is trying to avoid three straight Red River losses for the first time since 1997-99.

Numbers say this should be lopsided. Oklahoma ranks 120th nationally in total offense at 321 yards per game, and Texas edge rusher Collin Simmons is coming off a school-record 5½ sacks against Tennessee, pushing his career total to 28½. But Texas has its own questions: quarterback Arch Manning has been inconsistent under pressure since a comeback win over Ohio State. Rivalry games have a way of compressing those gaps.

The subplot worth watching: Oklahoma receiver Parker Livingstone transferred from Texas, where he was Manning’s roommate and best friend. He says it’ll be different, but he won’t think about it. Easy to say in October, harder to do when the ball’s in the air at the State Fair. Ellis County fans making the trip to Dallas or watching from home will get the full show either way. Kickoff is Saturday at the Cotton Bowl.

Who are you taking in this one: Texas or Oklahoma?
