The biggest football Saturday of the fall is here, and it’s an easy drive from Ellis County. Number one Texas puts its undefeated record on the line against Oklahoma Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Cotton Bowl, played right in the middle of the State Fair of Texas. The Longhorns come in 4-0 and ranked first in the nation, while the Sooners sit at 2-2 and unranked. More than 90,000 fans are expected, and the stadium will be split in half, burnt orange on one side, maroon on the other.
If you’re making the trip, plan your day around the fair, not just the game. Fair gates open at 7 a.m., and your game ticket includes fair admission, so arriving early gets you food, free concerts, and a much calmer walk to the stadium. Cotton Bowl gates open at 11:30 a.m. for the 2:30 kickoff. Security screening applies at every entrance, and all bags must be clear. Bring sunscreen and reapply it during the afternoon, because October sun in Fair Park still has plenty of bite.
As for the game itself, the records say Texas should handle this one. The rivalry says otherwise. Oklahoma has nothing to lose, and an unranked team with a chip on its shoulder is exactly the kind of team that ruins a number one season. Whether you’re wearing burnt orange or maroon, Saturday is going to be one of those days North Texas talks about for a while.
