Texas Falls From No. 1 After Manning’s Late Interceptions in 27-24 Loss to Oklahoma

Texas spent a week as the top team in college football. It lasted until Oklahoma got ahold of the Longhorns in Dallas, where a 27-24 Sooners win knocked Texas down six spots to No. 7 in the AP Top 25. The game turned on a blocked-punt touchdown, a pile of defensive penalties, and two Arch Manning interceptions in the fourth quarter. One of them went back 42 yards for a touchdown that gave Oklahoma its first lead of the game.

Manning didn’t make excuses afterward, saying the team beat itself. Coach Steve Sarkisian was just as direct, pointing to penalties and a run game that never found traction. It’s the kind of loss that raises questions about whether the No. 1 ranking came a few weeks too early, and whether Manning is ready for the kind of pressure that comes with the position.

The good news for Longhorns fans: there’s no time to sulk. Florida comes to Austin on Saturday, the first of three straight home games. After that, Texas faces four consecutive ranked opponents, a stretch that will define the season one way or another. Ellis County, we know you’ve got opinions on this one. What’s the biggest problem Texas has to fix before Saturday?
