Oklahoma knocked off top-ranked Texas 27-24 Saturday when Tate Sandell connected on a 47-yard field goal as time expired, delivering the Sooners their first win over a No. 1 team since 2007. The victory moves Oklahoma to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in SEC play, while Texas likely surrenders its top ranking when the next poll drops.
The box score tells a strange story. Oklahoma managed just 238 total yards and didn’t score an offensive touchdown until a two-yard run. The Sooners found the end zone on a blocked punt recovery and a pick-six off Texas quarterback Arch Manning, who otherwise threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Texas had a chance to reclaim the lead late, but Gianni Spetic missed a 53-yard field goal with 1:55 remaining, setting up Oklahoma’s winning drive.
For local fans, this one cuts deep no matter which shade of orange you wear. The Red River rivalry has delivered plenty of memorable finishes over the years, and this one joins the list. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian called it a level of disappointment and frustration, acknowledging his team has issues to fix. Oklahoma’s John Mateer said he thought about this game for 365 days and called the final quarter the longest he’s ever been part of.
So where does Texas go from here? Does a loss like this end playoff hopes, or does the talent on that roster still make the Longhorns dangerous? Let us know what you think.
