RJ Mitte, the actor who played Walter White Jr. across all five seasons of “Breaking Bad,” died Monday at age 34 in Brownsville, Texas. Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa declared him dead at about 1:30 p.m. A cause has not been released, and an autopsy will be performed.
Mitte appeared in nearly every episode of the AMC series as the son of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White, a role his representatives said he brought authenticity to by drawing on his own experience living with cerebral palsy. That authenticity carried past the screen. Mitte became a prominent advocate for disability awareness and inclusion, using his platform to challenge stereotypes and push for better representation of people with disabilities in film and television. The show he helped define was recently ranked the best of the 21st century in a New York Times poll.
For a small town audience that knows what it means to show up for neighbors, Mitte’s second act is the one worth noting. He could have coasted on a hit series. Instead he spent his visibility making room for people who rarely get it. His family has asked for privacy while the autopsy is completed.
