Back-to-back weeks, back-to-back special teams disasters. Texas gave up a punt return touchdown to Tennessee, then watched Oklahoma block a punt and take it to the end zone in Saturday’s 27-24 loss. Add an opening kickoff out of bounds and a missed 53-yard field goal from Gianni Spetic, and the kicking game has directly cost the Longhorns in two consecutive SEC matchups.
The offense hasn’t picked up the slack. Arch Manning threw two fourth-quarter interceptions against the Sooners, including one returned for a touchdown, and Texas has now gone three-and-out 15 times over its last two games while ranking 12th in the SEC in total offense. Punt returner Ryan Niblett’s average has dropped from 22.67 yards last season to 8.61 this year.
Coach Steve Sarkisian says he won’t strip duties from special teams coordinator Jeff Banks, telling reporters that history is the best indicator of the future and that the program has been strong on special teams for quite some time. It’s a loyalty play that Longhorn fans around Ellis County will be debating all week. So we want to hear from you: should Sarkisian make a staff change, or is this on the players to execute?
