Oklahoma City opened its season with a 116-104 win at San Antonio on Tuesday night, and the rematch of last year’s Game 7 Western Conference Finals did not disappoint. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 32 points, while Jared McCain added 20 off the bench, hitting six of eight from beyond the arc to help the Thunder build a 65-44 halftime lead.
San Antonio had no answer for OKC’s defense early. Victor Wembanyama missed his first twelve shots and finished 1-for-13 with 12 points, a night the Spurs star will want to forget quickly. The Spurs did make it interesting with a 23-9 run to open the third quarter, but Oklahoma City answered every punch down the stretch.
The game also added fuel to a growing rivalry. De’Aaron Fox was assessed a Flagrant Foul 1 for throwing Chet Holmgren to the floor in the second quarter, touching off a scrum that produced four technical fouls. Oklahoma City responded with a 9-0 run, then 13 straight points. For a community that loves a good rivalry weekend, this one delivered plenty of drama.
