Rantanen’s Overtime Hat Trick Lifts Stars Past Bruins 3-2

Mikko Rantanen saved his best for last Tuesday night at the American Airlines Center, scoring on the power play 3:52 into overtime to complete a hat trick and lift the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins. It was Rantanen’s 11th career three-goal game and his first regular-season hat trick since joining the Stars.

Boston made it difficult. Jeremy Swayman stopped 22 shots, including two Wyatt Johnston breakaways about ten seconds apart in overtime, and the Bruins got goals from Matthew Poitras and James Hagens. But Boston went 0 for 4 on the power play and saw its five-game win streak end, despite finishing its Western Conference trip at 3-0-1. Jake Oettinger made 18 saves for Dallas, which won its third straight.

Dallas is back home Thursday to host Winnipeg, and Boston returns home to face Nashville the same night. Stars fans in Ellis County don’t have to drive far to catch the action, and after a finish like that one, the next game might be worth the trip.

What was your reaction when Rantanen buried the overtime winner? Drop us a note and let us know.
