A Van Zandt County sheriff’s deputy was killed and a Canton police officer was wounded Tuesday night in a shootout while officers served felony warrants at a rural home near Canton, roughly an hour southeast of Waxahachie. Sheriff Kevin Bridger said officers were outside the home when shots were fired toward them from inside, and they returned fire. The suspect was later found dead inside the home from a gunshot wound.
The wounded Canton officer was shot in the right arm, required surgery, and is listed in stable condition. Deputies had been assisting Canton police with warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a peace officer. The Texas Rangers will lead the investigation, and the names of the deputy, officer, and suspect have not been released as families are notified.
