Young Texans Flock to Birding, Then Take On Window Strikes

Birding has a reputation problem, and Texas students are fixing it. At Trinity University in San Antonio, a campus chapter launched with help from Danny Kelleher of the Bexar Audubon Society, and chapter president Cole Robinson says the appeal is simple: a hobby where he learns something new every single day. The club is part of a broader shift as younger Texans take up binoculars and start paying attention to what’s flying around campus.

That attention turned into a project. Members began tracking birds striking campus windows and found the toll averaged one incident a day. Rather than just recording the number, the group went to the school and is working on adding decals so birds can see the glass before it’s too late.

The story lands close to home for anyone in Ellis County with a big window and a bird feeder. Collisions are rarely something people notice until they start looking. If you’ve got glass that gets a lot of traffic from the feathered variety, a simple decal or two is a cheap place to start. Have you ever had a bird hit a window at your house, and did you find a fix that worked?
