The Houston Texans’ defense was the NFL’s best a year ago. Through seven games of this season, it looks like a different unit altogether. The Giants ran for a season-high 188 yards against Houston on Sunday, and three plays into overtime, Devin Singletary’s 30-yard touchdown run ended a 27-21 Houston loss. The Texans are 2-5.
The numbers are stark. Houston allowed an NFL-best 277.2 yards per game last season. This year that figure has jumped to 342. Cam Skattebo did the heavy lifting Sunday with 124 rushing yards, and Giants quarterback J.J. McCarthy found Malik Nabers on the first snap of overtime to set up the finish.
Coach DeMeco Ryans said the fix won’t come from one grand move. He dismissed comparisons to last season, calling it a new year with a new team, and stressed fundamentals and better tackling. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and defensive end Will Anderson both pointed to the same idea: all 11 defenders need to be on the same page. What’s your read on the Texans’ slide? Do they climb out of it, or is this season already slipping away?
