Texas Woman Marks 110th Birthday, Recalls Waitressing for Bonnie and Clyde

Winnie Edna Woodley of Texas celebrated her 110th birthday on October 27, surrounded by family who captured the moment on smartphones. In her lifetime, she has seen both world wars, the Great Depression, and the moon landing. Her father was a sharecropper on an East Texas farm during the Depression, and her family descends from the namesakes of Woodville, Texas.

But the detail turning heads is a memory from her waitressing days. She once served Bonnie and Clyde at a restaurant in Toyah, Texas. Her son John Gillespie says he didn’t learn about it until a 1960s movie about the infamous duo came out and the story finally surfaced at home. Most people only know the outlaws from film. She knew them from the other side of the counter.

Winnie still enjoys birthday cake and a crown, and her family calls it amazing that she can keep doing what she does. Her milestone is a reminder that the oldest neighbors among us carry firsthand history that no documentary can match. Have you ever asked the oldest person in your family about the world they grew up in? Share their story with us.
