Texas early voting surges toward record midterm turnout

Texas is barreling toward a record midterm turnout. Nearly 5 million early ballots have been cast statewide with a week still on the clock, and the state is on pace to pass the 5.51 million total from 2022. Ellis County is pulling its weight, with election officials reporting a fully staffed operation, 360 poll workers ready to go, and about 30,000 newly registered voters added this year.

The voter experience in Waxahachie is staying smooth so far. Residents like Solomon Redmond and Shanetia Hill have reported wait times around 15 minutes, which election administrator Jana Onyon’s team wants to keep right where it is. Political consultant Derek Ryan thinks up to 80% of all ballots this cycle could be cast before Election Day, a shift that’s been building a long time. Election Day is starting to feel like a backup plan rather than the main event.

If you haven’t voted yet, early voting runs through the end of the week. Check the Ellis County elections website for locations and hours, bring your photo ID, and budget about 15 minutes. It’s a fast trip with a long reach. Have you already cast your ballot, and how did the line treat you? Tell us in the comments.
