Early voting is open across Texas, and Dallas County voters face one of the more closely watched measures on the ballot. Proposition A would levy a tax of $248.65 per $100,000 of assessed property value, with the money directed toward programs that reduce homelessness and expand access to mental health treatment. It’s one of more than four dozen propositions appearing across nine counties this election season.
The need behind the measure is visible in communities across North Texas. A 2026 Close to Home report found nearly 600 more people sought homelessness assistance in Bexar County from 2022 to 2025. Dallas resident Fidelia Amaefu, who nearly experienced homelessness herself after moving from Nigeria, now runs the Beyond the Scars Foundation, helping homeless immigrants reconnect with family overseas. “Everybody deserves a second chance,” she says. SMU political science professor Matthew Wilson notes that voters tend to sympathize with causes like this, but many are feeling economic insecurity and already believe their property taxes are too high.
For Dallas County homeowners, the decision comes down to a dollar figure on one side and a community need on the other. If you live outside the county, the outcome still shapes the region, from services to local budgets. Have you looked at what Proposition A would add to your tax bill? We want to hear how you’re weighing it.
