Dallas led Arizona by 14 points in the fourth quarter at AT&T Stadium on Sunday. The Cowboys lost 33-30 in overtime anyway, falling to 3-5 and dropping their fifth straight game to the Cardinals, who are now 5-0 all time in Arlington. The run game that piled up 204 yards a week earlier managed just 2.4 yards per carry, and Dak Prescott finished with 195 passing yards as the defense surrendered four touchdown drives after halftime.
Afterward, owner Jerry Jones did not single out head coach Brian Schottenheimer, but he did not defend him either. “It’s an indictment of the whole show,” Jones told reporters. “At this point, talk is cheap. Telling stories is cheap. We’ve got to go write on our story.” Dallas has now spent just one of 25 weeks above .500 under Schottenheimer, though a weak NFC East keeps the season from being lost outright.
The loss followed a familiar script: a lead that looked safe, a defense that could not get a stop, and a missed Arizona extra point in the final seconds that gave Dallas a chance it could not convert. Local fans know the feeling well from Friday nights at Lumpkins Stadium, where close games get decided by exactly this kind of second-half letdown.
Do the Cowboys still turn this around, or is 3-5 the real story of the season? Let us know what you think.
