Two East Texas Small-Town Cafes Worth a Detour

A traveling food writer recently spent two Saturdays in a row eating his way through small-town East Texas, and the report is a reminder of something we already know around here: the best breakfast is rarely off a highway exit ramp. First up was 4-Way Cafe in Flint, where the lemon blueberry pancakes were so good the writer said they didn’t need syrup. His wife ordered The Western Bowl and came away equally impressed.

The following Saturday, he pulled into Y’all Come Back Cafe in Emory for one reason: the parking lot was full. Fifteen minutes in line later, the chicken-fried chicken proved the crowd right. That’s the oldest restaurant review in Texas, and it still works. Small towns like Ben Wheeler, Chandler, and White Oak don’t always have the big chains, but they’ve got mom-and-pop kitchens with good food and friendlier service.

We’ve got the same thing right here at home. Waxahachie’s Saturday-morning spots, the ones where the regulars know the servers by name, are part of what makes this town feel like this town, even as it grows. So the next time you’ve got a free Saturday, take a drive and follow the crowded parking lot. Where do you think we should eat next?
