ICE officer accused of ramming SUV into Houston immigrant turns himself in

A federal immigration officer is now facing a felony charge in Harris County. Mario Alberto Morales, 33, turned himself in Monday on aggravated assault, accused of driving an unmarked SUV over a median and striking a Mexican construction worker in Houston on October 10th. The worker, 48-year-old Miguel Parra Hernandez, broke his leg and is recovering at a rehabilitation facility while in federal custody.

The case hinges heavily on surveillance video. Prosecutors say the footage contradicts ICE’s original claim that Parra Hernandez ran in front of the vehicle. A grand jury indicted Morales on Friday, and a judge set bond at $30,000, lower than the $75,000 prosecutors requested. Morales’ attorney maintains his client is a good man who committed no crime.

What makes this case unusual is its rarity: federal officers are seldom criminally charged over enforcement actions, and this comes amid the broader national debate over immigration enforcement. Texans across the state are watching how the legal process unfolds. Do you think video evidence should be the deciding factor in cases like this? Let us know on our social pages.
