Three shootings in Dallas’s Deep Ellum district early Sunday morning killed four people and injured 15, all within about 75 minutes. By Monday, federal and local authorities had announced “Operation Deep Cover,” an effort to flood the entertainment district with additional law enforcement. Officials said the shootings stemmed from arguments and are still investigating whether the incidents were related.
The Dallas violence unfolded during a broader wave of Halloween weekend shootings across the country, with deadly incidents reported in Birmingham, Jackson, Mississippi, and several college towns, leaving at least 10 dead nationwide. U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould said everyone deserves the freedom to celebrate a night out “without fear for their safety or their children’s safety,” adding that the violence has to end.
For Waxahachie residents, the story lands close to home. Plenty of locals head up I-35 for dinner, concerts, and nights out in Deep Ellum, and the shooting comes as the county continues to grow and more people share the same roads and venues. Nationally, FBI data shows the homicide rate fell 18% in 2025 to its lowest point in 75 years, a reminder that overall trends and individual tragedies can tell very different stories. Have more patrols in nightlife districts ever made you feel safer when you’re out?
