A name familiar to anyone who’s attended a South Texas wedding or quinceañera is now headed to Congress. Bobby Pulido, the Grammy-winning Tejano musician, has defeated incumbent Republican Monica De La Cruz in Texas’ 15th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press. It was Pulido’s first run for public office.
De La Cruz made history in 2022 when she became the first Republican elected to the district since its creation in 1903, and she followed that up with a 14-point reelection win in 2024. The district spans from New Braunfels to McAllen, taking in parts of Edinburg and the eastern San Antonio suburbs, a region with deep cultural ties to Tejano music.
The flip carries national weight as Democrats work to reclaim the U.S. House majority, and it raises an interesting question about how much name recognition and cultural connection matter at the ballot box.
