Democrat Jon Rosenthal Flips Texas Railroad Commission Seat

Democrat Jon Rosenthal, a Houston state representative, has won a seat on the Texas Railroad Commission, defeating Republican Bo French. It’s the first Democratic victory for that office since 1990 and the first statewide Democratic win in Texas since 1994, ending more than three decades of Republican dominance in statewide races.

The commission’s name is misleading: it regulates oil and gas, not railroads. That makes the seat far more consequential than it sounds, especially for a fast-growing county like Ellis, where energy and development questions are part of everyday life. French, a former Tarrant County GOP chair, had beaten incumbent Jim Wright in a May runoff but drew bipartisan criticism over a social media post about UT students. Rosenthal ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Whether this is a one-cycle protest vote or the beginning of a larger realignment is the question everyone’s asking. Statewide races rarely turn on a single moment, but thirty-two years is a long streak to break in one night. What do you think this result says about where Texas politics is headed?
