A Piece of History Right Here in Waxahachie: Hometown Radio KBEC
Since its founding on June 26, 1955, Hometown Radio KBEC has been a cornerstone of Ellis County life. Faye and Richard Tuck founded KBEC with a dream to create a radio station that would not only serve Waxahachie but also build and unite the entire community. They moved to Waxahachie in 1952 to pursue this vision, and their passion has made KBEC the longest family-owned radio station in Texas. The Tuck family's dedication to Ellis County is even embedded in the station’s call letters, KBEC, which stand for "KEEP BUILDING ELLIS COUNTY."
A Changing Landscape
Throughout its history, KBEC has evolved, adapting its programming and content to better serve the community. In 2022, KBEC transitioned to new ownership when Jon Garrett and his wife Alyssa purchased the station, with Ken Roberts continuing his role as head of programming since the Richard Tuck days. Though ownership may have changed hands, KBEC’s dedication to providing local news, entertainment, and connection remains stronger than ever.
A Community Voice
The day starts with Ken Roberts and the "Coffee Cup," a voice that has been a constant for Ellis County listeners and a pillar of this radio station. After the Coffee Cup, Ken and Barry host the Flea Market, where listeners can buy, sell, and trade – a piece of Waxahachie history that remains vibrant today. Barry Wolverton, who takes care of you during the workday from 1-4 PM, is also the station’s Sales Director, bringing music, local stories, and community engagement to the afternoon programming.
But Ken Roberts is more than just a morning presence. Known as the Voice of Ellis County, Ken brings you Waxahachie Indian Sports LIVE on Hometown Radio KBEC, alongside Coach Mike Turner. Whether it’s football, basketball, or baseball, Ken’s voice connects generations of listeners to the local sports action they love. His in-depth commentary and passion for Ellis County athletics make him an irreplaceable part of the Waxahachie community. For many, tuning into Waxahachie Indian Sports on KBEC is as much a tradition as the games themselves.
In the afternoons, The Jeremy Show takes over, with Jeremy, a DFW radio veteran who started at KBEC when he was just 16, bringing lively and interactive programming.
KBEC's playlist is a tribute to country music’s greatest artists, spinning timeless hits from legends like George Strait, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, The Judds, Merle Haggard, and Tanya Tucker. With a focus on real country music, KBEC offers a listening experience that resonates deeply with its audience.
Today, KBEC is accessible wherever you are. Tune in at 99.1 FM, 1390 AM, or stream live at KBEC.com to stay connected to the heart of Ellis County. The ability to listen from anywhere means KBEC continues to be a part of your life, whether you're around the corner or across the country.
